Wolfville Area Food Bank Since it was established in 1970, the Wolfville Area Inter-church Council has been working to address issues of hunger and poverty in Wolfville and the surrounding area. On February 1, 2007, the Council opened the Wolfville Area Food Bank which operates out of the Wolfville Baptist Church. The food bank has been a success story from the beginning, thanks to the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals who have generously donated money, time and food. Given the recent rise in the cost of many foods, as well as rising fuel costs, and with no significant change in the social safety net to meet these changes, the food bank is currently facing a financial crisis. We now provide food for more than 60 households (individuals and families) each month. Each household may visit the food bank once per month, where they will receive enough food to last less than a week. Some of the food we supply comes from our affiliation with Feed Nova Scotia, but the bulk of the order consists of perishable food bought locally with funds donated to the Council. Gary Dunfield, Chair of the Wolfville Area Inter-Church Council, and Liz Vermeulen, Chair of the Food Bank Management Committee, wish to thank the local community for its support, and to point out the serious, growing need. Many people in Wolfville and area have been donating each fall to the Inter-Church Council’s annual appeal for funds. However, you don’t have to wait to donate. Here’s how to help today:

For the time being we have enough of these two items; however, we can always use double-bagged grocery bags. Please note there is a Food Bank barrel located by the inner exit at the Wolfville Save Easy to receive donations of food items so the next time you are shopping and wish to contribute food items, your support will be appreciated. Here is a list of suggested items you may wish to contribute, Kraft Dinner, soups, pasta and pasta sauce, beans, canned meat, cereal, soap powder, snack foods for school lunches, and drink packs. Donations may also be left in the hamper located in the entryway of the church. If you shop at the Grocery stores in New Minas/Kentville, etc., please bring your donations to the Wolfville Area Food Bank back to the church. Donations deposited at these stores stay at Fundy Food Bank in New Minas. If each church family/member purchased just one food item per week, the Food Bank shelves would be well stocked. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please call 542-0040 or email us at wolfvilleareafoodbank@gmail.com
